Chef Esdras Ochoa plans eatery in Hong Kong

Esdras OchoaMexican chef Esdras Ochoa is quitting Los Angeles this month to live in Hong Kong, with plans to open a Mexican restaurant in Kennedy Town.

Born in Mexico City, Ochoa first caught attracted attention in LA in 2009 with handmade tortillas with authentic Mexican sauces he served from a truck in an empty parking lot in downtown LA. After the not-so-legal food truck was raided by the police, he opened a restaurant, Mexicali Taco, serving Baja-style tacos, quesadillas and nachos, and offering a DIY salsa bar.

Ochoa then became founding chef/partner of Salazar, an alfresco eatery that landed a spot on this year’s GQ’s Best New Restaurants list.

His Hong Kong restaurant will be a casual taqueria offering Ochoa’s signature tacos and grilled meats, and using fresh local produce where possible. As well as a full bar there will be pool tables.
