Majestic: China’s Guiyang Zhongshuge bookstore recognised
The new Zhongshuge store in Guiyang has been recognised in Architectural Digest as being among the world’s most majestic bookstores.
The 36,000sqft store in the Guizhou provincial capital was designed by Shanghai firm X+Living and features criss-crossing staircases and mirrored ceilings reminiscent of the artwork of MC Escher.
“The clients asked me and my team to create a bookstore that was also a landmark,” said X+Living president Li Xiang, the chief designer on the project. “The glass ceiling enlarges the space, while creating something that appears more magical than it does real.”
China’s book retail market was valued at around US$13.4 billion last year, an 11.3 per cent year-on-year increase, based on burgeoning online sales.
